Is there room for just one more contender in all the tablet market? HP believes so, and last full week it launched the TouchPad: a slate that looks much like competing devices on the outside of, but offers a healthy, new take on the within with the webOS software system. Apple's iPad currently contains the lion's share of that tablet market, mainly since it offers a strong end user experience, a myriad of applications and a strong media ecosystem. HP's TouchPad clearly faces an issue in the latter two areas for now, but in terms from user experience, there's a lot to like.

Superb multitasking. When HP bought Palm plus the webOS platform last season, the company wisely continued the most compelling functions found from the operating system: simple however effective multitasking. Applications open up in full-sized windows, nevertheless one touch gesture 鈥? a finger flick through the bottom of the tv screen 鈥? shrinks the app right small card. Users can swipe through multiple cards for the TouchPad to jump from one app to another. Along with similar cards are easily grouped together. Open multiple websites, for example, and the TouchPad stacks them for easy access. Closing an app is as simple as flicking a fabulous card off the the surface of the tablet screen.
Monster messaging. Another webOS differentiator for HP's Touchpad will be the singular Messaging app who integrates several services. From app, the TouchPad natively facilitates Google Talk, AIM, Skype music and video calls, Aol! Messenger and future third-party apps. TouchPad owners who have a webOS smartphone may well send and receive text messages from the application in the process.
Notifications. 聽These are a necessary evil for any mobile phone device, and there's a fine line to balance. People don't need to be pestered with "in your face" notifications for each email, message or news blurb. But incoming notifications cannot be missed either, or these people defeat their primary intention. The TouchPad offers the very best of both worlds, and in many cases an added bonus. Notifications appear directly within the device lock screen which is why them at first start looking. An LED light in the house button blinks when you will find notifications and the TouchPad exhibit is off. When using the tablet, notifications appear within the top right of the screen and are also stacked by application: Messages are grouped as happen to be Facebook updates, text messages, etc. You can swipe as a result of these聽notifications, and if there's one which requires attention, a quick tap opens the聽appropriate聽application.
Printing device integration. 聽I often use a tablet instead of a full notebook or computer help and although I usually do not print often, when I have to print, it's a must-have functionality. Other tablets, notably Apple's apple ipad, now support wireless producing, but the TouchPad travels toe-to-toe with the iPad in this region. That's likely due that will HP's commitment to handheld and cloud printing: Not long ago i bought such an "ePrint" piece of equipment, and the TouchPad on auto-pilot discovered my Photosmart C310 unit. Wireless or network computer printers not found automatically might be added manually with the particular devices' IP addresses. That may choose different print settings for example 2-sided printing or coloration, directly from the TouchPad.
A keyboard for all those hands. 聽I think the most under-rated features of the TouchPad would be the re-sizable聽keyboard. In either portrait or landscape mode, holding the keyboard button introduces four size choices: further small, small, medium as well as large. When I passed these devices around to several many people and told them with this function, I found that used different sizes, customizing the keys exclusively for their hands and apply. Given that mobile items are highly personal, the customized keyboard sizes offer both a great personalization touch and a wider range of input usability.
A new canvas for developers. The grade of apps on the iPad causes it to become a compelling device and also TouchPad has a ways of catch up here when it comes to quantity. But I've already realized some outstanding new features seen in webOS apps that not even the iPad had. Get the Facebook app, by way of example. There still isn't one to the iPad, but the webOS type is stellar. Outside of chat support, there are no major features As i find lacking. And a distinctive magazine-style layout option has no equal on any several other Facebook client: You can see this useful design around my video overview of the actual TouchPad below. Need an additional example? I constantly check WordPress to watch and respond to reader comments here on the blog, which leads to various checking in on the comment queue. I need not do that on a TouchPad though, because the program supports integrated notifications on webOS: Comments appear alongside my emails and text messages, where I can fast manage them.

The last aspect is one that shows the most promise to my advice because I'm awaiting seeing what applications third-party developers could easily create for HP's TouchPad. However, this strength also points out one of several key reasons why consumers may balk on the TouchPad for now. An excellent mobile platform on some tablet with strong put faitth on features is nice, and not enough for everyone to make the purchase. Instead, your TouchPad offers much to help like now, with the possibility of even more to including later. As much mainly because I'm enjoying this examine unit, it's that potential that we 鈥? and many some people 鈥? are waiting to view: Holiday Gift Guide: Fashionably Technological
Note that there are quite a lot of other pleasant aspects with the TouchPad: a great mail client, a wireless charging dock and also the JustType feature that works as a universal search function, to mention a few. My report on likes will likely vary from yours, but these six items jumped out within me. With solid basics dealt with for the TouchPad, 聽access to your media store聽and strong third-party apps would be the key for HP's TouchPad going forward. <! --INFOLINKS_OFF-->.
